A Lesson in Metalstep -- Part 2

Posted by mr-jazzman - June 23rd, 2010

Last night, I was chillin with some good friends of mine, listenin to some metal as we were drivin around. I don't really listen to Attack Attack! much (I always thought they were a generic metal band, not too much of anything unique going on), but when my friend put this song on, it hit me:

.
/* */
This is more than just a breakdown of a song...this is the beginning stage of metalstep -- the cross of metal and dubstep. It has everything that audiences of both genres would like. The "drop" is when the guitar is on the flanger, and the "anticipation" that I love in all dubstep tracks comes with the first utterance of "You're better off dead!" immediately after. The drums are exactly dubstep if you listen closely enough, that slow kick-snare switch-off on the downbeats. I'd say the only things that prevent this song from going all-out metalstep is that it doesn't have any wobble bass (which it shouldn't obviously, as it's not a dubstep tune), and it breaks down even further towards the end.

I dunno, maybe I'm just getting excited about nothing, but as I explained earlier, I really want to try and make an authentic metalstep tune. It's gonna be tough, it's gonna be hard, but if I use this as a model, I think it'll be possible.

Thoughts?

more like scenestep. =P

? what do you mean by "scenestep" lol?

just saying, attack attack is pretty much the scenest band out there.
but theyre pretty broot dont get me wrong.

Haha that's what I thought you meant. They're...okay lol. They are pretty damn brutal, but not the most brutal I've ever heard (that award probably goes to the likes of either Emmure, Periphery, Winter Solstice, or December Everyday...I'm sure there's some other brutal ones out there, but it doesn't get much more brutal than a nice dropped A or B tuning lol). I equate these guys to the same level as guys like August Burns Red (who are still among my favorites, even though I think they're on a downturn), Dance Gavin Dance (post-Johnny Craig), and Devil Wears Prada. Brutal, but not quite at that same level of intensity...but not as sold out as Killswitch Engage or Bullet for My Valentine though lol. So...scenestep yes lol. But also metalstep. ;)

I know what you mean... not a huge fan of the band though. Have you listened to BMTH? Similar kind of band, and they have a remixed version of one of their albums with various electronic/dubstep versions of deathcore songs. It's called "Suicide Season Cut Up", you should definitely check it out. Not quite "metalstep" though.

Yeah, like I said, I'm not a huge fan of Attack Attack! either. Yeah, I've listened to some Bring Me the Horizon. They're okay. They actually gave me some ideas to do some metalstep lol. I've heard "Sleep with One Eye Open," and it's not quite what I want to hear for a metalstep tune lol. It just seems like whoever made the track took the original and used a table to slow the track down, giving it a "wobble bass" appeal, even though it wasn't necessarily authentic. It was an interesting idea though for sure.

damn i remember when attack! attack! sounded a lot more electric and had a crappier singer. not saying i didn't like them before but they definitley changed a lot.

if you liked this song you might like some of these songs/bands n stuph :D.

Hey dude, been throwing down to your reflections tune the past week, everyday. Then I read a bit into what you do, and found this. Great tune choice by the way.

I love metal myself, and dream of the day both metal and dubstep could join as a super god! :)

I do know one dubstep track that has always made me have hope. Borgore - You Wont Take My Crown.

Check that track out if you havent before.

And a great metal band, whom I think have the heaviest drops. Not so much dubstep drum beat, but seriously heavy drops. Like on a good soundsystem you feel the bass when it drops, just like those classic Datsik tunes.

The band is Blind Witness. I kinda hope you havent heard of em before, cuz that leaves room for my advice being useful :).

Good luck champ! Keep fighting this fight, your dubstep is pretty damn badass. You have more than enough talent to be signed to Rottun or something.

Dude, thank you so much for the suggestions! I like Borgore (although some of his stuff is just a little too far removed from what I'd like to make), but I've never heard You Won't Take My Crown. And I've never heard Blind Witness surprisingly. Not a bad band, although they remind me a bit of Emmure combined with ABR (mainly because they have a melodic feel combined with the dissonance in their breakdowns). Dude, thanks again for the advice and the encouragement, glad you share the same enthusiasm that I do! =D

EDIT: That "You Won't Take My Crown" is seriously some sick shit. I definitely hear it coming. The drums need to be harder, the guitar needs a little more melody, and vwa-la, insta-metalstep!
