What The F***, John Sercu?

Posted by mr-jazzman - February 25th, 2010

Okay, I normally don't get too frustrated with the people who are #1 in the All-Time Top Scoring in the Audio Portal, even if the song really doesn't catch my attention; hell, I landed one up there not too long ago, and I found out it usually takes a good amount of luck to get there. However, I can't believe I'm witnessing this, I never thought I would in my entire life: The man in the #1 spot ALSO has the #2 spot, and had the #1 spot a week ago from writing this. I figured it was a fluke, but then I looked at the man that submitted these songs: John Sercu. A man from Belgium, with his sign-up date being 1/25/10. Okay. January 25th of 2010. One month before me writing this post. How the f*** did he do it? I looked, and the man has a FOLLOWING. Wow. So he signs up on NG, and gets 2500 of his followers to give him 5s. Awesome. Problem is, his shit sucks!!! Just listen to it; my brother and I thought it came directly from one of those $100 Casio keyboards. This is an abomination. NG is a site essentially for indie producers, not for people with huge followings (which, I'm stunned that this man even has so many people following him) to come in and dominate everybody else. How the hell is anyone supposed to get their stuff noticed otherwise? It would be like if Lil Wayne came in and decided to sign up for a NG account, using Lil Wayne as his name and having full permission to submit his songs (which, even though he's awesome IMO, brings in "big names" to NG; just an exaggeration of what's happening right now). It really defeats the purpose. For now, #3 is really #1 in my heart. John Sercu can jump off a cliff for all I care, it's really unfair to submit to NG with a huge following already. Use Myspace, for Christ's sake! That website is already loaded with tons of unnecessary garbage as it is.

He proxy votes his music. I even took screen shots and sent them to Nan, an audio mod. Obviously they don't care though cause they simply took one of the songs and posted them on the front page. And by front page I don't mean the audio portal main page, but Newgrounds' front page.

It does get a bit obnoxious to see those cheating the system don't get punished even when proof is shown they are cheating. But welcome to the Newgrounds audio portal. We aren't here for our benefit, we are here for the flash artist's benefit. So the fact there even is a weekly top 5 and all time top 30 should not be taken for granted. No matter how badly those up there might have cheated to get it.

Yes, this is true. And that's what I hate about it lol. Audio Portal people always get screwed, and the fact is that it's a VERY important community to this site. Without Audio Portal, Flash would suck! It's a shame the mods don't regulate it better...and it's even MORE of a shame that they would post it to the main page! This is exactly why I've started submitting my music to SoundClick as well (and there's a very good chance that I won't be submitting anything more than previews to NG eventually); even though that community is ridden by professional artists (which takes away from the indy producer a bit), it's still a full-fledged music community.

Yeah, his stuff is crap - i swear its just midi file downloads off the net somewhere. Copy pasta'd into reason n shit. But yeah, proxy voting would do it - i can't imagine it wouldn't be too hard to do either.

IMO fuck john sercu.

Hell yeah! Thanks for sharing the opinion! =D

I've heard some of his songs... I didn't drop any review, it sounds really basic for me and the piano he used in all of his classical pieces sounds crappy MIDI as hell...
What the... ? No velocity variations? No scales effects? Stoppit :S

05. Pour Anne - John Secru -> I don't know why this song is still in the all-time top scoring Oo

Dude, I asked myself the same question! Damn proxy voting >=(
